Simplify Simplify Simplify!

When facing any major event in your life there is always time to simplify. For us it was looking at the fact that we now were faced with fitting 6 people into our just over 1000 sq foot 4 level split home. A home in which we had first thought to be a starter home and then we would move up as we got bigger. Our plans had changed when we thought we were done growing as a family and we decided our home was just the right size for our family of four. Now even with the boys arrival upon us we still feel that hopefully our home is the right size with a few adjustments here and there.

Having our family grow was the perfect excuse for us to clean out a bunch of things in our home we did not need lying around. We had been slowly purging items over year prior but with twin boys coming it was the push we needed to let go of some of those things we just were not using and taking up valuable shelf space. Since we are not fortunate to have a garage our basement has become a storage area for us. We do have a little shed outside and a few pieces of our camping gear was elected to be put out there in storage bins. We also got familiar with Kijiji on the selling side. We sold the items that we could and then either donated any good items or took advantage of our once a year large item pick up with our garbage. Cleaning out all the items we did really helped us to feel like we had better space in our home.

We also went around our rooms in our home and figured out a few things in each room that would make it more organized. Whether it was just a few baskets from the dollar store to clean up a cupboard space, or a filing system (big or small) to tame those loose papers. We made some big changes too by finally finishing off our bookcase entertainment stand unit to stretch our full wall. This helped us out big time, by giving us more shelf space and areas for toy baskets to go. Houses do not always need a huge make over to feel organized, although I’m sure we would all love to have some design show come to our home and fix it all up for us, little changes within your families budget can help make a big difference at a small cost.

Along that thought as a money-saving tip, watch stores like Ikea because they quite often have sales on items where if you spend so much you get so much back in gift cards. You get extra savings there, finish a project you’ve wanted to for a while and get a little extra money to tuck away for the next one. Also Ikea is really great for organizing solutions at a low-cost.

Please make sure though whenever you are working on simplifying your home and organizing that you check into your local municipalities recycling options. Please do not throw away something that can be recycled. Also try to repurpose any large items too in your home into something different as well or offer to friends or on Kijiji for free. One persons trash is another person’s treasure and the less we keep out of landfills the better.

From our happy family to yours!
