Green Tips

  • Go for a walk instead of watching TV or booting up your computer. It’ll do you and the whole planet a lot of good.
  • Battle germs and mould with green disinfectant. Mix up a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide with two parts water in a spray bottle and use on areas to be disinfected.
  • Insulate everywhere. Boosting the insulation of roofs and attics, floors, walls and basements will keep you cool in the summer and toasty in the winter.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and you’ll save 95 litres a month. Clean water is a precious resource, no matter where in the world you live.
  • If you heat with wood, ensure your firewood comes from sustainable, well-managed woodlot. Be careful of using off-cuts from mills. When picking up wood from the roadside, check first with authorities, it may be illegal.
  • Try vegetarian restaurants and meatless menu alternatives when you go out, they’re sprouting up all over the place.
  • Make suggestions to your employer about ways to save water, energy and office supplies at work. Remind them that saving resources is also saving money.
  • Reduce the amount of water in each flush. If your toilet was installed before the early 1990’s, you’re probably using more water than needed. Look into putting a water displacement device in your tank.
  • Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). They’re 75% more efficient than conventional bulbs and they’re very high on the list of ways to reduce energy consumption and associated GHG emissions.
  • Wash dark clothes and colours in cold water. It will save you both energy and money, while it helps keep your clothes to keep their colours.
